I turned down speaking gigs because it would take me out of the office and “put me behind”. I missed out on a lot of opportunities before I realised the mistake I was making.
Soon I was making decisions very, very differently.

The Formula to Being An All-Star Decision-Maker
- An opportunity passes across your desk.
- Ask yourself: “Is this going to take me one step closer to feeling how I want to feel, to living how I want to live, or to being how I want to be?”
- If yes, figure out how to take it on without running everything else into the ground. Your lifestyle needs to be maintained https://www.excellence-expected.com/401-the-pursuit-of-happiness-or-the-maintenance-of-lifestyle/, remember, as you transition into your ideal life.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not perfect. I’ve made some “questionable” decisions using this formula, but I haven’t regretted a single one.
Decision paralysis can beat the best of us. Drill this formula into your head. It will cut through the noise and illuminate the only things that really matter.
How I Used The Formula to Claw Myself Out of Burnout
From February to April 2018, I was on the edge of burnout.
We had to decide whether to recruit a new designer and be the same as we were, or make some bold moves and recruit differently to become the business we want to be for the next 10 years.
We had to make some ballsy changes while covering the additional workload. We did well, but it pushed me to the edge. My decision-making became slower. I started second-guessing everything. At times, it felt as if I could no longer trust myself to make the right call anymore.
But, applying the formula saved me.
During this time I leant on the formula whenever I had a decision to make. When I sensed I couldn’t trust my own intuition, I used the magic question to cut through all my time-wasting uncertainty:
“If we say yes to this decision, will it take us closer to being how we want to be as a business, and will it allow me to live my life how I want to live it and help me feel how I want to feel?”
I applied it to every decision I had. Somehow, it worked every time. We came out strong.
If you have defined what you want to be, you can fall back on this formula, too.
Practice The Formula Until It’s Muscle-Memory
This is not some hypothetical thought exercise.
The formula needs to become muscle-memory for you. Practice it on a few hypothetical opportunities, or onto ones you have either taken or turned down in the past. It might be a little painful to see your old decisions in such a naked new light, but you will only build resilience by building what you want to be.
If you’re not moving toward what you want to be, you’re moving away from it. Let’s only make decisions that’ll move us closer, shall we?
